Classic Tour of Sicily

An 8 days / 7 nights Classic Tour of Sicily. Departure and arrival: Palermo.

Day 1: Palermo – Monreale

Palermo, charming capital of Sicily will welcome you for the starting day of this unforgettable tour! Palermo was one of the richest cities in Europe from the 9th to the 12th centuries AD when Islamic culture, Byzantine magnificence and the vigorous world of medieval Europe were merging into a fascinating civilisation. Today, the city maintains a sense of cultural diversity and is famous for its art, music and food.
We will visit the Cathedral, “Palazzo dei Normanni” with its Palatine Chapel, the “Quattro Canti”, the Opera House, the Pretoria Square and the famous S. Giovanni degli Eremiti Church.
In the afternoon driving into the hills just a short distance out of the capital, we go on to visit the majestic Norman Cathedral of Monreale. Founded in 1174 by William the Good, the Cathedral is also famous for its splendid 12th century mosaics, as well as its beautiful cloister of the Benedectine monastery with Moorish architecture showing both Romanesque and Islamic influences. Day 2: Segesta – Erice – Trapani Salines

In the morning, the magnificent Segesta – one of the best-preserved ancient Greek sites in existence – will welcome you with its archaeological park and its famous “solitary” Temple in pure Doric style set in a stunning natural scenery!
We will be fascinated by Erice, a small medieval village with ancient Greek origins, situated on a little hill, where it is possible to enjoy a fantastic view on the Egadi Islands.
The visiting day will proceed with the whiteness of Trapani salt pans, whose Salt Museum set on in an antique mill, tells us the story of the ancient tradition of the harvest of this precious mineral.

Day 3: Mothia – Selinunte

In the morning we will take a short boat ride out to the tiny island of Mothia. With a history far transcending its diminutive size, it was one of the Mediterranean’s most important Phoenician settlements. Our visit will take in Mozia’s unique museum and the ruins of a remarkable civilisation including its harbour.
Back on the mainland, plunged in the suggestive Mediterranean landscape, Selinunte archaeological park will show us the glorious testimony of a mythical past, which will immerse you in the legendary Greek history.

Day 4: Agrigento – Piazza Armerina or Caltagirone

The morning will be dedicated to Agrigento defined by Pyndar “the most beautiful city of mortals”. Among hundreds of almond trees, the rests of the ancient Akragas rise. In the Valley of the Temples we will admire the Concordia Temple, the Heracles Temple, the Juno Temple and Castor and Pollux Temples which represent the most beautiful example of the Greek Civilization in Sicily.
We will continue to Piazza Armerina, in the heart of Sicily, where “Villa Romana del Casale”, will fascinate us with its splendid Roman polychrome mosaics, Unesco World Heritage Site.

Day 5: Etna – Taormina

The highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, rises majestically on the entire east coast. We will reach the “Crateri Silvestri”, small volcanic cones now inactive, surrounded by ancient lava flows where we will enjoy an almost lunar landscape and a fantastic panorama of the Ionic Sea. In the afternoon you will be stunned by Taormina, small medieval village called “the pearl of the Ionic Sea”, famous for its typical picturesque narrow streets (where you can buy the best local handcraft such as jewels and ceramics) and its fascinating Greek Theatre, the antique Dome and Palazzo Corvaja.

Day 6: Syracuse – Noto

Syracuse is the most beautiful Greek colony of Sicily. Its famous Archaeological Park of Neapolis, will leave you breathless with its Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Latomie of Paradise and the Dyonisios “Ear”. Besides you can not miss Ortigia small baroque island, old city centre of Syracuse where you will admire the beautiful Cathedral and the famous Arethusa’s Fountain.
The visiting day will proceed towards Noto, the capital of Sicilian baroque, famous for its fine buildings of the early eighteenth century and declared Unesco World Heritage Site. Inspired by Baroque ideals of “open city”, Noto is a rare masterpiece and the clearest example of theatrical tastes in 18th century architecture. Noto’s Baroque is in fact a game of elegant curves, floral weaves, perspective views palaces and gardens, capitals and ornaments that adorn the facades of churches and monasteries. We will visit Palazzo Nicolaci, beautiful noble residence in Baroque style.

Day 7: Catania – Riviera dei Ciclopi – Acireale

Catania stated Unesco World Heritage Site, you can immediately recognize it with its original baroque style and its unique streets built with lava black stone! Its magnificent Cathedral the symbol of devotion to the patron Saint Agata, the famous Duomo Square where the “Liotru” statue (a black lava stone elephant statue) is set, symbol of the city. Not far from there we will reach the University Square and we will have a walk along the splendid baroque Via dei Crociferi, where we will admire the famous S. Benedict Monastery, Unesco World Heritage Site. We will continue walking along the precious historical city centre to discover the ancient Roman Amphitheatre, the Opera Massimo Bellini Theatre.
We will proceed for a panoramic tour of the seaside towns of Aci Castello (which takes its name from its Norman Castle) and Aci Trezza, whose panorama is commanded by the “Faraglioni” (three tall, column-shaped islands that, according to Homer’s legend, where thrown to Ulysses in “The Odyssey”); it is also known for being the town where Giovanni Verga’s novel “I Malavoglia” is set.
The visit to the Etna area ends with Acireale, where the stone buildings and the iron of the balconies marry creating a beautiful baroque decoration.

Day 8: Cefalù – Palermo

Nearly at the end of our Classic Tour of Sicily, you can not leave our island without visiting the charming Cefalù, wonderful medieval town situated at the northern coast of Sicily. We will visit the famous Norman Dome, one of the most beautiful churches in Sicily with the elegant annexed cloister and rich of precious Byzantine mosaics.
After lunch we will reach Palermo airport for the departure of the group.
